Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Your blood contains four ingredients — red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. While your platelets are largely recognized for their role in clotting, they also contain a variety of proteins called growth factors. These growth factors stimulate cell renewal and proliferation in damaged tissue to help your body rebuild and repair itself.

With platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, Dr. Bustamante harnesses and redirects these growth factors to where you need it most. The first step is drawing some blood from you, which he places into a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. Once they’re isolated, Dr. Bustamante mixes the platelet concentrate (which is 5-10 times stronger than normal) back in with a small amount of your plasma and injects the resulting mixture directly into your damaged tissue.

Upon injection, the platelets begin to release growth factors that encourage cell renewal and repair.

How does stem cell therapy work?

Your body contains a medical marvel called stem cells, which are unlike your other cells in that they are undifferentiated. While most of the cells in your body are devoted to one task only, your stem cells can become different cells and multiply as that cell. Your stem cells are most powerful during fetal development, but some remain in your body and help with rebuilding and repairs. But these stem cells are weaker and not numerous enough to help with moderate-to-severe tissue damage.

To make up the difference, Dr. Bustamante uses placental tissue matrix (PTM) therapy, which taps the growth factors, collagen, extracellular proteins, and bioactive molecules naturally found in human placental tissue. These placental tissue components may provide your body with the resources it needs to reduce inflammation, restore tissue, reduce scarring, and alleviate pain.

What can regenerative medicine treat?

Dr. Bustamante uses regenerative medicine to treat a host of podiatric issues, such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendon issues
  • Tendinitis
  • Arthritis
  • Ligament tears or strains
  • Joint pain
  • Chronic inflammation

Given that stem cells and platelets are a natural resource, Dr. Bustamante turns to regenerative medicine anytime your tissue can use a healing boost and as a way to treat your condition without resorting to surgery.
